He has worked with many elite sports such as GB Badminton and Judo as well as three years with Premierships Rugby Club, London Wasps. Paul retrained as a Psychodynamic therapist at Brighton University then in CBT at Sussex University. His research area is how athletes cope with long term injuries and pain management
He is a Registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (www.bacp.co.uk) and, as well as a practitioner, sits on the Executive Board of the Rock Clinic (www.rockclinic.org.uk). Four approaches. Which is the most beneficial for you?
People can interpret events in many different ways leading to a variety of emotional and behavioural responses. CBT examines current unhelpful thought patterns, exploring how they can affect your emotions and actions in the here and now. This helps you to change how you think, focusing on ways to improve your psychological wellbeing. Negative thoughts and beliefs play a significant role in the development and maintenance of conditions such as depression, anxiety or low self-esteem.
Performance coaching is often described as a series of conversations that are designed and conducted to enhance someone's well-being or performance. This is based on the premise that performance in any field can be enhanced by creating a partnership and exploring how performance might be taken to a new level. Both parties bring expertise to that conversation, thereby constructing a plan, with realistic and time based goals to achieve an end result.
Psychodynamic counselling provides a broad range of therapeutic approaches helping you to understand the cause of your problems and issues. With a strong emphasis on the trust between a client and counsellor, psychodynamic therapy provides the tools required to make progress with issues that may have roots deeply buried in the past. It also helps equip you with knowledge and suggestions to enable you to cope with further difficulties.
Many of us will suffer injury as a result of participation in sport or maybe accidental falls. The physical side of us can be put back together but often the mental aspects of injury are ignored. Adherence issues, loss of confidence and indeed questions of who you are as a person may accompany serious injuries as well as questions around how the injury occurred. Psychological injury rehabilitation should work hand in hand with your physical recovery speeding you back to a full fitness.
